How has Y-MAC improved the lives of young people in San Francisco?
- Since 1992, gave 5,000 youth a year a voice by running YouthVote's mock election in the schools.
- Organized over 15 safe, citywide youth events to build unity between students from different schools and neighborhoods in the city.
- Increased the number of books by people of color in the high school English curriculum.
- Got the school district to involve students in choosing the new History textbook, through the Student History Curriculum Committee.
- Got the School Board to add two YOUTH Delegates to the San Francisco School Board.
- Made sure politicians hear from the youth: Organized youth speak outs on the budget, the Childrens Fund, juvenile justice issues, etc.
- Campaigned for the Childrens Fund in 1991 and again for Prop D in 2000. Helped make sure at least $25 Million a year goes to youth programs!
- Helped to create the SF Youth Commission.
- Won $175,000 in annual funding for YouthSpace, the city's first youth-run, citywide youth center.
- Did city's first youth-led evaluation of youth centers.
- Helped fight against Prop 21 in the Bay Area
- Got the school board to pass the Safe Schools Resolution, which monitors and regulates what cops can do on school campuses.
- Got the city to create and fund $1.4 million for Wellness Centers/health clinics in 7 high schools in San Francisco.
- Reduced the juvenile hall population! Got the juvenile probation dept and JDAI process to create and implement a new intake system, using the Risk Assessment Instrument at YGC
- Helped fight the Alameda County Superjail for Kids – down from 540 to 450 beds.
- Helped Californians for Justice win a 2 year statewide delay of the High School Exit Exam!
- Supported all the folks building up the Bay Area Youth Movement: Olin, Third Eye, YouthForce, YUCA, YouthPower, HOMEY, etc!
